Alfama – If you’re yearning to experience the soul of Lisbon, Alfama’s narrow lanes and traditional Fado houses provide a deep dive into the city’s Moorish roots. It’s an area that’s both mystical and deeply evocative.

Unfortunately, like many bustling capitals, Lisbon has its fair share of pickpockets and individuals peddling drugs, particularly in tourist-heavy areas such as those mentioned above (Baixa, Chiado), and along the vibrant promenades of the nightlife-favored Bairro Alto. However, DO NOT let this deter you, intrepid explorer, for with a few savvy strategies, you can safeguard your journey from unwanted distractions. Firstly, always stay mindful of your belongings, opting for cross-body bags or money belts that keep your valuables secure and out of sight. I can tell you first hand that I’ve had unassuming drug dealers approach me asking if I wanted to buy sunglasses. However, soon there after, they’ll ask you if you’re looking for any party favors. Moreover, a courteous but firm “no, thank you” is typically all that’s needed to deter those offering illegal substances. Additionally, blending in as much as possible—by avoiding flashy jewelry and consulting maps discreetly—can further reduce unwelcome attention. This is common sense information but holds merit any place in the world.
